Mission Statement

The Hilo High School Viking Band strives to foster a lifelong appreciation for music, character, and service. We aim to develop responsible, confident, and compassionate young leaders through performance, teamwork, and community engagement.

Program Philosophy

Music education is about much more than learning notes and rhythms. Participation in the Viking Band provides students with opportunities to develop discipline, responsibility, leadership, communication, and teamwork. These skills extend far beyond the rehearsal room and prepare students to become successful members of their communities.

History of the Hilo High Viking Band

Hilo High School, established in 1906, enrolls around 1,100 students annually from all across East Hawaiʻi Island. The Hilo High Viking Band is one of the oldest school music programs on Hawaiʻi Island, established in 1939. The band has been an important part of the school’s traditions for generations. Around 100 students participate in concert band, marching band, pep band, and community performances throughout the year. 

Notable Achievements & Performances

The Viking Band strives for excellence through its strong musicianship, dedication, and community involvement. Throughout its history, the band has represented Hilo High School at major events across Hawaiʻi and beyond, showcasing the talent and spirit of Hilo’s students. Notable Performances include:

• Regular performances at football games, school assemblies, concerts, community parades, Veterans Day celebrations, holiday events, and cultural festivals.
• 1971 Tournament of Roses Parade
• 1988 Sea World Holiday Bowl
• 1992, 103rd Tournament of Roses Parade
• 2001 Carnegie Hall
• 25 years as a participating school of Nā Koa Aliʻi
• 2025 Honolulu Festival alongside Hilo High’s hula program, Nā Liko Lehua O Hilo Hanakahi
• 2026 Kyoto Tachibana High School Band collaboration in Kyoto, Japan
